Iitam’matstooyii - Happy New Year
We are excited to welcome you and your students back after the winter break. We hope you had a restful winter break.

Cold Weather | Blue Day Procedures at Niitsitapi Learning Centre
When the weather is exceptionally cold (colder than -20 degrees Celsius) students will not go outside at lunch. When this happens we will plan activities indoors. As Calgary weather can sometimes be extreme for several days in a row, we will plan for rotating activities that allow for movement and variety for our students.
During the winter months cold temperatures, wind chill and snow can make getting to and from school challenging.

Our school and other CBE schools rarely close due to snow or cold weather. Assume we are open unless you hear otherwise from us. Information regarding any school closures due to weather will also be posted on the CBE website, on CBE’s social media channels and shared with local news media.
If your child will not be attending classes please ensure you contact the school attendance line to report the absence.

During the winter season we remind parents/guardians of the following:
• Children should be well prepared for the weather and not left unattended at bus stops for any period of time, under any circumstances.
• Families should ensure they have backup care arrangements if transportation is delayed. Children should have a warm place to stay before and after school (i.e. with a neighbour or a nearby relative).
• All CBE schools will remain open to provide a safe, warm and secure environment for students

MRU Nurses
We welcome our guest practicum nurses next week, starting Tuesday, January 16. They will be joining our kindergarten classes on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays until February 15.

2024-25 School Calendar
The 2024-25 CBE instructional school calendar is now available. The first day of school for students for next school year is Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024. The calendar includes a minimum of 181 instructional days and 10 system-wide days for schools to schedule parent-teacher conferences, professional development, and other organizational days. The NLC calendar will be posted on the school website by the end of June with school-specific information(e.g. conferences, celebrations of learning, school council dates, etc.).

Inii’s Insights
The winter moons remind us that each First Nation has unique stories and cultural teachings. Elder Anita Eagle Bear has shared that this moon (January) is known to the Kainai asaisstoyiimsstaa, which means causes cold weather. A calendar shared by the Piikani Nation names this moon ómahksiki'somm, Old Moon. When Grandmother Moon
begins her cycle again in February, she is called piitaiki'somm, Eagle Moon, across Blackfoot Territory. Their return to the rivers will tell us the ice is melting - a subtle shift towards warmer weather and a promise that a new season is coming.
