We are Niitsitapi
The Niitsitapi Learning Centre (NLC) welcomes preschool to Grade 2 students from across Calgary, focusing on early intervention for First Nation, Métis, and Inuit children. We aim to build a strong academic foundation within a learning environment that honours and celebrates Indigenous identity. We strive to create a culturally responsive setting that supports lifelong learning by nurturing the mind, heart, body, and spirit while embracing the diversity of Indigenous cultures, languages, and ways of knowing, being, doing, and learning.
Our goal is to prepare Indigenous students for success in both Indigenous and non-Indigenous contexts, promoting balance and harmony in their lives. Our holistic, strength-based early learning programming emphasizes a strong sense of Indigenous identity alongside academic excellence to support long-term success. We teach the Alberta Education curriculum through the lens of Indigenous Education, ensuring our students experience rigorous and culturally enriched learning experiences.
Is an Indigenous Education Focus the Right Choice for My Child?
A successful student demonstrates:
• pride by focusing on academic, cultural, and individual growth
• a desire to learn through an Indigenous lens
• active participation in regular ceremonial activities
• engagement in language learning experiences, dancing, drumming, singing, and cultural arts activities
If your child identifies as First Nation, Métis, or Inuit, and Indigenous Education programming is the right fit, scroll down to the "Ready to Register" section to get started.
Regular Program
What is the Regular Program?
The Regular Program spans from kindergarten through grade 12, providing a comprehensive educational experience. In alignment with provincial standards, our curriculum not only integrates academics, arts, and physical education but also emphasizes tailoring the learning adventure to individual strengths and interests. We're all about inclusivity, providing special education resources to support diverse learning needs. Beyond the classroom, students dive into a world of extracurricular activities, including sports, arts, music, and community service, making every day exciting. We believe in teamwork, actively encouraging parental involvement through events like parent-teacher conferences, creating a collaborative and supportive educational atmosphere.
Alternative Program
Learning to Fit Each Student's Needs and Interests
Alternative programs provide a distinct educational experience by focusing on specific subjects or languages and engaging students with advanced learning methods or in unique classroom environments. These programs are designed to personalize education to meet students' learning needs and goals. Additionally, some alternative programs may be more flexible regarding schedule or structure, giving students greater control over their learning. Parental involvement is highly encouraged through activities such as parent-teacher conferences and school events.
