Frog Moon (Matsiyikkapisaiki'somm): This season marks the awakening of nature as we listen to the melodious songs of frogs emerging from their winter slumber. The arrival of Frog Moon signifies the melting ice and rising waters, heralding new beginnings.

As the waters rise, the Ksiskstaki (beaver) makes its first return to the water, an auspicious sign inviting us to open our beaver bundles and call upon the animals for support in our endeavors.

Blackfoot Elder Anita Eagle Bear teaches us that April is the time of Matsiyikkapisaiki’somm, or Frog Moon. This reminds us of the frogs’ joyful return, signaling the end of their hibernation and the blossoming of spring. Let us embrace the teachings of Frog Moon, celebrating renewal and the interconnectedness of all our relations. Frog Moon Teachings

Word of the Week

Speech and Language Pathologist Ms. Kailey

Each week, we will be focusing on a new “Word of the Week” (WoW) at school to help boost language skills. The WoW will be chosen to encourage vocabulary growth, strengthen communication skills, improve grammar, and help your child increase their understanding of language. Throughout the week, we encourage you to emphasize the WoW in everyday conversations and activities at home. Families can do this by reading books and finding the WoW, playing games, or simply chatting about your child’s day together. Helping your child think about the WoW at home will make learning even more meaningful!

The WoW this week ties in with the Blackfoot value of kakoysin – being aware of one’s surroundings or environment, being observant. As we move into Spring, we can practice kakoysin by noticing the changes around us.

“see”

(“look”)

“See” is a verb (action word). It is important when sharing our observations about the world with others.

Ask your child what things they “see” around them that they like or that they find interesting.

Make sure to share your own thoughts with your child about what you see. This helps them understand that other people see different things than they do.

Instead of reading the words in books, ask your child to tell you the story based on what they “see” in the pictures.

Practicing this skill while reading helps children learn how to follow the story and identify story elements like characters and events.

Go on a scavenger hunt outside. Ask your child what they “see.” Look around for signs of spring!

Spring Weather

As we embrace the spring season, we’d like to remind you to please dress your child appropriately for the weather! Here are some helpful tips to ensure they stay comfortable and dry during school: Puddle, Rainy Day, Spring, Rainboots, April, May

  • Layering Options: Dressing in layers can help! If they get a little wet, having a warm layer underneath will keep them comfortable.
  • Waterproof Outerwear: A waterproof jacket or raincoat to keep them dry.
  • Footwear: Waterproof boots or shoes are helpful to keep little feet dry.
  • Spare Clothes: Consider packing an extra set of clothes in their backpack in case they get wet during outdoor play.
