The Orange Shirt Society was founded to raise awareness of the lasting impacts of Indian Residential Schools on Survivors, their families, and communities, while supporting ongoing reconciliation efforts through the message that Every Child Matters. 

At Niitsitapi Learning Centre, we recognize the importance of learning about this part of our shared history and honouring the experiences of those affected by residential schools. Wearing an orange shirt is a meaningful way to show respect, remembrance, and our collective commitment to ensuring that every child is valued, respected, and supported.

Nutrition Plan

Alberta Education Literacy and Numeracy Screeners 

Teachers have begun administering Alberta Education & Child Care's Literacy and Numeracy Screeners to students in Kindergarten to Grade 5. The screening window runs from September 14 to October 2. 

These brief assessments help teachers identify student strengths and learning needs in literacy and numeracy so that instruction and supports can be tailored to meet individual learning needs. The screeners are one of several tools used to monitor student progress and guide learning. 

Parents and guardians have the right to exempt their child from participating in the screeners. If you wish to exempt your child, please contact your child's teacher as soon as possible. 

If you have questions about the screeners or how the results are used to support student learning, please reach out to your child's teacher. 

Picture Day – Tuesday, September 22 

Picture Day is Tuesday, September 22! Students will have their individual school photos taken during the school day. 

We encourage families to ensure students arrive on time and ready for their photo. Picture packages will be available for purchase, and information from the photography company will be sent home with students. 

We look forward to capturing our students' smiles and celebrating another great year at Niitsitapi Learning Centre! 

Bus Transportation Reminder 

Please review bus expectations with your child, as safe bus travel is a shared responsibility.  

All NLC buses display an NLC sign, school logo, driver's name, and route number for easy identification. 

Who Do I Call? 

• Bus stop locations, bus times, delays, or a bus that has not arrived: Contact Dreams Transportation at 403-590-7433. Please save this number in your phone. 
• Dreams Transportation manages bus routing, bus stops, and daily transportation operations. 
• Niitsitapi Learning Centre cannot provide information about bus locations, delays, stop assignments, or transportation schedules. 

Address Change? 

• Please notify the NLC office immediately if your address changes. 
• Transportation updates may take several weeks to process, especially at the beginning of the school year.

Elbow River Healing Lodge Wellness Clinic 

Niitsitapi Learning Centre, in partnership with Primary Care Alberta and Elbow River Healing Lodge, offers an on-site Wellness Clinic for students, parents, and extended family members. A physician is available weekly by appointment. 

Through the support of community partners and funders, including The Calgary Foundation and Education Matters, the clinic helps improve access to health services and supports health promotion, prevention, screening, and early intervention for Indigenous students and families.

Interested in Volunteering at NLC? 

We welcome family and community volunteers at Niitsitapi Learning Centre. Before volunteering, all volunteers must complete the Annual Volunteer Registration form each school year. Parents and guardians can register through the SchoolEngage tab in their MyCBE account or contact the school. Community members without a child enrolled in CBE must register in person at the school.

Indigenous Student Dancers for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 

CBE Indigenous Education is inviting Indigenous student dancers to participate in a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation event hosted in partnership with the City of Calgary and the Calgary Separate School Division (CSSD). 

The event will take place on September 30, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland (750 9 Ave. S.E.). Students who participate will receive a gift card in recognition of their contribution. 

Families interested in learning more can view the event poster. 

Contact information for families who are interested in having their child participate or who have questions is included in the poster. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to share their gifts and represent Indigenous culture and community during a city-wide event recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
